Pets: Our Furry, Scaley, Fuzzy Companions Against Loneliness

Think you need another human to feel less alone? Think again.Turns out, dogs (and other animals) really can be our very best friends.

After all, is there anything more satisfying than snuggling up with your pets at the end of a long, hard day? Is there anything more heartwarming than those puppy-dog eyes? Than the unconditional love of an animal?

In this Edition of Fighting Lonely, we look at how our pets support us in the deepest of ways and how that is backed up by science.

How Exactly Do Pets Help Us Fight Loneliness?

Pets are excellent companions. They listen. They're perceptive. They're always there for you—no matter what.

But even more than companionship, pets bring a whole range of health benefits that boost our overall well-being. They relieve our stress, lower our heart rates and blood pressure, and encourage us to be more physically active. Together, these benefits directly reduce mortality risk and help us cope with physical and emotional situations, including pain and isolation.

There's even more. Pets give us a love that's pure, innocent, and unconditional. This helps fight depression, uplift our mood, and build resilience. Studies even suggest that pet owners laugh more frequently than those without pets—sign us up!

Another huge benefit? Pets get us outside. It might seem counterintuitive, but feelings of intense loneliness can prevent people from leaving the house. Dog walking pushes us outdoors and gets us moving. Plus, dogs are excellent icebreakers—they help us build connections with strangers.

Similarly, spending time with a cat, rabbit, or other pet at home provides companionship and daily routines that ground us and support our long-term health.

Heartwarming Adoption Stories—With a Difference

The future of pet ownership is officially here.

In New York, tens of thousands of older adults are finding joy and comfort through a unique initiative that gives them animatronic pets, AKA robots. So far, the research suggests that these robo-dogs and -cats offer all the loneliness-combatting benefits of a real pet without the burden of care.

The Animatronic Pet Initiative

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) launched an innovative program inspired by Director Greg Olsen's daughter, who bought an animatronic pet. These robotic pets mimic real pets' sounds and movements, providing lifelike companionship.

The Incredible Results

Since 2018, NYSOFA has distributed over 31,000 animatronic pets to seniors experiencing loneliness. The initiative has shown impressive results, with 75% of recipients reporting reduced feelings of loneliness and decreased pain
