The Connection Between Creativity & Loneliness
Creative pursuits can help you feel more connected—to yourself and others.
Does Creativity Spark Connection?
There are few things more human than creative expression.
Writing poetry, painting, throwing pots—these seem like solitary pursuits, activities that might cause us to retreat, to become lonely. But this isn't always the case.
Creativity is an expression of our shared humanity. It's a manifestation of what we feel, how we see the world, and the challenges we are striving to overcome. When we hear a song that resonates or watch a film we can relate to, we feel seen, heard, connected.
That is the power of creativity. And that is how we can use our creative pursuits to overcome loneliness. In this Edition of Fighting Lonely, we dig into that a little deeper.

How Creativity Combats Loneliness
Creating forms of art allows us to communicate our thoughts and emotions. Whether you're sketching out your next masterpiece, composing a heartfelt poem, or playing the piano, the very act of creation provides an outlet for your innermost feelings. It nurtures the connection you have with yourself. When you are more connected with yourself, you can connect with others more deeply.
This is just the beginning. Here are some other ways creativity combats loneliness:
Building Community
Without a sense of belonging or a connection with other like-minded people, we may become lonely. Joining creative communities—whether online or in person—gives you an avenue to meet others who share your interests.
Finding Friendship at the Intersection of Art and Technology
Technology can be a powerful tool for combating loneliness in an interconnected world. Virtual platforms pave the way for creative collaboration with individuals worldwide (see: r/place).
Using Creativity as Mindfulness
Engaging in creative hobbies requires a focused and present mindset. It's a form of mindfulness, even meditation, that draws your attention away from negative thoughts.
Turning Loneliness Into Something Beautiful
Loneliness is a powerful emotion. Through your creative pursuits, you can channel it into something beautiful, something meaningful, something to be proud of. Many of humanity's great works of art, literature, and music have been inspired by the very deepest, darkest human emotions. Of course, this includes feelings of isolation. Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper and many more artists have used isolation to fuel creativity and in turn bring them back to a community where they belong
Opening Doors to Personal Growth
We can reframe loneliness and see it as an opportunity to learn something new about ourselves. By taking up a new creative pursuit, we open the door to personal growth and potential friendships.

Artist Feature: Hunter Franks and the Neighborhood Postcard Project
Hunter Franks is an artist and the founder of the Neighborhood Postcard Project, which uses creativity to build community and fight loneliness. The project collects positive personal stories from residents in marginalized neighborhoods and sends them to random local residents to create connections between people and communities. Over 350 postcards have been sent from five distinct San Francisco neighborhoods. The goal is to bring together strangers from different backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles.
The Neighborhood Postcard Project has made waves, with similar initiatives popping up in Connecticut, Portland, New York, Chile, and Washington, D.C.
Franks also founded the League of Creative Interventionists, a global network of people collaborating to shape communities through creativity. Through monthly interventions in public spaces, they get strangers talking to each other.
