Mindfulness isn’t difficult. We just need to remember to do it.
Transform feelings of loneliness into connections with the present and with yourself.
“Mindfulness isn’t difficult. We just need to remember to do it." — Sharon Salzberg
You've probably heard of mindfulness before. It's all about being present and fully engaged with whatever we're doing in the moment.
It's a little bit like hitting the pause button on life. We quiet all those thoughts about what happened yesterday at work or what will happen tomorrow and we tune into the here and now.
What's going on around you? How do your clothes feel against your skin? What noises can you hear? The neighbors dog barking? Traffic? The TV playing softly in another room?
We pay attention to our thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judging ourselves or labeling our emotions as good or bad.
We just be.
It's a powerful practice, one with a whole host of life-changing benefits—including combatting loneliness.
In this Edition of Fighting Lonely, we look at mindfulness and meditation and how they can help us counter isolation and loneliness.

How Meditation Combats Loneliness
Loneliness is a complex emotion that can leave us feeling isolated and disconnected. Meditation offers a way to explore and understand this feeling without trying to push it away.
Using meditation, we can start to understand why we feel lonely. We can even improve our social connectedness and reduce feelings of isolation. A study involving 815 participants over eight weeks showed significant reductions in loneliness—in other words, the loneliness-fighting power of meditation is backed up by science.
So, where does the magic come from? One theory goes like this: By becoming more aware of our thoughts and feelings, we can start to see loneliness as a temporary emotional state, not a permanent part of our identity. All of a sudden, loneliness becomes manageable. We don't have to fear it. We can accept it.
Another potential reason meditation is a powerful tool in the fight against loneliness is that it brings us back to the present moment. This awareness encourages us to appreciate the little things—the warmth of the afternoon sunshine or the taste of a perfectly sweet orange.
Finally, meditation and mindfulness build resilience. We can face loneliness with kindness and courage.
5 Steps to Start Your Mindfulness and Meditation Practice
If you want to explore the potential of meditation to overcome feelings of loneliness or isolation, follow these steps.
Find a Quiet Space
Choose a place where you won’t be disturbed. Sit or lie down. Make sure you are comfortable.
Take Deep Breaths
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. See if you can lengthen your exhale. This helps your body fall into a state of relaxation. Focus on the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body. Where can you feel it? Through your nose? In your belly?
Acknowledge Your Feelings Without Judgment
Turn your attention to any feelings of loneliness without judgment. Imagine you are an outsider looking in. Observe these emotions with kindness and curiosity.
Be Compassionate
Speak to yourself with compassion. Think to yourself, “It’s okay to feel lonely.” Say, "I am just as worthy of connection as others." It might feel a little awkward at first, but this self-talk can deepen your acceptance of your feelings.
Think About Connection
Imagine a warm light that represents love and connection. Visualize this light expanding from your chest. Watch in your mind's eye as it expands out into the room you're in. See it grow and grow until it leaves your home and connects to others who might also feel lonely.
